Discover Almere

Almere is a young city with a short but unique history. Located just 20 minutes from Amsterdam, the city boasts 42 kilometres of coastline, a rich natural environment, impressive architecture and, not least, numerous exciting events. Take a cycle ride through the acclaimed Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve or shop till you drop in Almere Centrum, combined with refreshments at a pavement café in the sun: certainly a recipe for a perfect day out.

Exceptional natural environment

Close to Almere lies the exclusive Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve. This remarkable area of natural beauty was documented and captured for the big screen resulting in the most successful Dutch natural history film of all time: De Nieuwe Wildernis (The New Wilderness). Go on an expedition with a ranger and discover the natural habitats of red deer, Konik horses, white-tailed sea eagles, foxes and kingfishers. Take a breather at the welcoming Gasterij de Oostvaarders café at the Oostvaarders Experience Nature Centre. Binoculars are provided for you to observe the reserve animals close up. But Almere has even more nature in store. The Lepelaarplassen lakes are a haven for marsh and waterbirds and the observation huts here offer sightings of such delights as colonies of cormorants and sedge warblers. Or spot the beavers at De Pampushout woodland where you can enjoy forest walks, cycling, horse riding and inline skating.

Exciting places to visit

True daredevils and adrenaline junkies looking for excitement should try the Fun Forest climbing park at the De Kemphaan Country Park. The climbing park offers courses of varying levels for all ages. Alternatively realise the hero in yourself at the interactive PIT security expo at Schipperplein in Almere Centrum; discover the vital role of the emergency services and what you can do to maximise their and your own safety. And how about facing the ultimate challenge at Cable Park Almere for some water skiing or wakeboarding on the Weerwater lake? Round off the day with a refreshing drink at a pavement café with views of the Almere skyline.
